Unlicensed Travel

Sauraxen's life has become chaotic of late —not a rare state for an Inter-Planetary Alliance certified engineer, she's always fixing broken ships without the right pieces to do it. But right now Sauraxen is stuck on a space station far away from her home planet and she just got the message she hoped never to receive. Her raising parent is dying.
Now Sauraxen has to figure out how to get home to Pitzk after a disastrous Deep Space Travel Assessment left her and her crew languishing in harrushetti space. More importantly, she has to do it without getting the crew permanently grounded.

The hotly anticipated sequel to Unlicensed Delivery, Unlicensed Travel is a queer adult sci-fi space romp with unabashed reverence for the campy sci-fi of the 1960s.

F.A.Q.

This book only exists because Unlicensed Delivery readers asked me to write it. I was going to move to another ship with a brand new crew but I kept having people ask for more of Galactic Whale, so here we are.

References to people trafficking, scenes of consensual intimacy, personal impact of the loss of a culture, and people struggling with familial relationships.

References to people trafficking:

Matter has been trafficked in their backstory, there are references to that. And two of our core cast get captured by a traffickign ship during the course of the book.

There is also continuing problems with wrexi being mistaken for pets, as there was in book one.

Scenes of consensual intimacy:

While these scenes are mostly fade to black, several of the characters enjoy intimate encounters with others throughout the book.

Personal impact of the loss of a culture:

We get more detail about the loss of Brruuh's familiy and culture in the disaster and the lingering effects it has left him with. Other characters struggle with feeling distanced from their home cultures.

And people struggling with familial relationships:

Basti is low-contact with his mama, Matter is low/no-contact with their father, Matter & Dimae are still struggling to figure out how to be family, Brruuh is struggling with being introduced to his paramour's family, and Sauraxen is struggling with the upcoming potential loss of a parent.

You came here looking for queer and/or disabled books? I got you.

The Inter-Planetary Alliance doesn't take kindly to bigotry, it's a default-inclusive world state but they're not perfect.

Queer/LGBTQIA+

As in book one our five protagonists:

  • Basti and Dimae are married, they are both men*.
  • Sauraxen has an ex with a different gender to her love interest and her casual sexual partner is of a different gender still. She is also poly/ambi-amorous.
  • Matter is nonbinary (they/them), aromantic-coded, polyamorous, and bisexual.
  • Brruuh is confirmed as bi in this book

*All of the aliens (Matter, Sauraxen, Dimae, & Brruuh) have their own cultural genders and are, by and large, nonbinary by Earth Common Eurean standards.

Disability

Matter has a chronic pain condition that causes them problems. Matter & Brruuh have both experienced Trauma (clinical definition) and have some trouble with the aftermath. Most aliens are neurodiverse coded. Sauraxen's parent has a terminal illness.

After the events of the last book, both Brruuh and Dimae are strugglign with lingering illness/injury. All five characters are dealing with the emotional aftermath of the events of the previous book.

A note about Sauraxen's vision: If she was a human, she would be blind. If you are blind and would like to claim her as blind, you are more than welcome. I have not labelled her blind because she is from a species who see through the reverberation of soundwaves, she rarely struggles with perception/sight and I do not think I have done due dilligence as a sighted author to claim her as blind. I have taken this stance based on research for a different, upcoming, blind character, and I am happy to be corrected and adapt as the series continues.
